Why I’ve Changed My Mind About Coffee Dates

For years, I was firmly in the “no coffee dates” camp.

To me, they didn’t feel romantic. They felt a bit too much like a business meeting. I meet clients and colleagues for coffee. When I’m dating, I want something different.

I love atmosphere. Music playing softly in the background. Warm lighting. A beautiful setting. A sense of occasion.

As I’ve come to understand myself better, I’ve realised this isn’t about wanting somewhere expensive or exclusive. It’s about being a sensual woman.

I experience the world through my senses. Ambience matters to me. When my senses are engaged, I naturally feel more open, relaxed and receptive to romance. After all, isn’t a date supposed to be a romantic encounter? At the very least, the beginning of one.

Not necessarily fireworks and instant chemistry, but the possibility of courtship. Two people getting to know one another. Discovering whether attraction can grow. Allowing fondness and connection to develop over time.

And yet… I’ve changed my mind about coffee dates.

Modern dating is very different from the dating culture many of us grew up with. Dating apps mean people are often meeting multiple potential partners, and in that context, a coffee date can actually make a lot of sense.

It’s relaxed. It’s low pressure. It’s easy to leave if there isn’t a connection, and easy to extend if there is.

Perhaps most importantly, it removes alcohol from the equation.

Meeting someone sober allows you to experience them as they really are and to show up as your authentic self too. Your judgement isn’t clouded, your inhibitions aren’t artificially lowered, and your first impressions aren’t influenced by a glass of wine.

While I’ll always appreciate beautiful ambience, I’ve come to see that a coffee date can be a sensible starting point.

Romance doesn’t always begin with candlelight and cocktails.

Sometimes it starts with two people, a warm drink, and an honest conversation.
